12South, Edgehill and Berry Hill are areas south of downtown Nashville along the 12th Avenue South and 8th Avenue South (Franklin Pike) corridors. 12South and Edgehill are Nashville neighborhoods; Berry Hill is a separately incorporated satellite city within Davidson County.
Edgehill is generally bounded by Interstate 40, 8th Avenue South and Interstate 65, Wedgewood Avenue, and 16th Avenue South, adjoining Music Row. 12South follows 12th Avenue South between Wedgewood Avenue and Gale Lane. Berry Hill, less than one square mile, lies along Franklin Pike near 100 Oaks Mall and Thompson Lane. The Nashville neighborhood boundaries are informal.
Development
After the Civil War, freed African Americans established one of Nashville’s earliest Black communities in Edgehill; mid-20th-century urban renewal and interstate construction later removed hundreds of homes. 12th Avenue South was originally Granny White Pike, and around 1900 a streetcar line and adjoining subdivisions were built along it. Sunnyside, a house built about 1852, stood between the lines during the 1864 Battle of Nashville and now houses the Metro Historical Commission. Berry Hill, incorporated in 1950 on the former Berry family farm, became a recording center after 1970 and is home to numerous studios and music publishers.
Parks & Recreation
Sevier Park, which opened in 1948 on the Sunnyside estate, contains the mansion and a community center. Berry Hill maintains four city parks.
