The Gulch is a neighborhood on the southwestern edge of downtown Nashville, between downtown and Music Row. The Nashville Downtown Partnership counts it as one of downtown’s neighborhoods and describes it as covering 91 acres.
Boundaries are informal. The neighborhood is generally centered on 11th and 12th Avenues South between Broadway and Division Street, with the interstate loop to the west and south, Pie Town to the east and Nashville Yards to the north. The North Gulch extends north of Broadway toward Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and Paseo South Gulch is a mixed-use development near 8th Avenue South.
Development
The area was a railroad yard with origins before the Civil War and declined after World War II. Cummins Station, a 1906 warehouse at 10th Avenue South and Demonbreun Street, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The Station Inn, a bluegrass venue founded in 1974, is on 12th Avenue South. Redevelopment began in the early 2000s, when the Turner family acquired land and partnered with MarketStreet Enterprises. The Gulch Business Improvement District was created in 2006, and in 2009 The Gulch became the first neighborhood in the South to receive LEED for Neighborhood Development certification.
Parks & Recreation
Gulch Dog Park is on Pine Street. The one-mile Gulch Greenway, part of the City Central greenway system, connects the area north to Capitol View and Frankie Pierce Park.
